After Newton's interception late in the first quarter, he finished the half a ideal eight for eight with two touchdowns, with 189 yards and a 126.3 quarterback rating. Andy Dalton also had four touchdown passes as the Bengals beat the winless Cleveland Browns 31-7.

A promising matchup against New England could be exactly what the former MVP needs to finally get on track.

This is the second straight week the Panthers have faced one of the best quarterbacks in the game, and this time around they're also facing one of the best teams in the National Football League, one that has won two of the last three Super Bowls. Tom Brady and the Patriots were magical at the end of last week's game against the Houston Texans, manufacturing a 75-yard game winning touchdown drive, capped off with a sensational catch from new acquisition Brandin Cooks.

Carolina is 1-1 all-time on the Patriots' home turf, losing the last road game of the series, 20-10, on December 13, 2009.

I think it's just going to take too much of a ideal effort from Newton and Co. It was a favorable opportunity that Newton managed to squander with arguably the worst performance of his entire career.

The Patriots (2-1) are riding the fantastic arm of the seemingly ageless Tom Brady. If he can't even play well against one of the worst defenses in the league how can we trust him to produce? Offensively, the Patriots hold the edge with their multiple weapons in the passing game, which should cause some problems for the Panthers.

The Panthers are in for a challenge on Sunday when they take on the defending Super Bowl champs in Foxborough. Julius Peppers was most disruptive, finishing the day with two sacks and four tackles.

Carolina's injuries are piling up and remain a serious concern for the team right now, so back the Pats to win big and cover at online sports betting sites.

The Panthers invested $55 million over five years this offseason in Kalil to protect quarterback Cam Newton's blindside and keep his jersey clean.

It doesn't help that the Panthers are catching Brady in the midst of a historic stretch. But up until last week, the first-round draft pick had been fairly quiet. He failed to make the play and Funchess turned it into a 13-yard catch, keeping what turned out to be a touchdown-producing drive alive. It's a point he could easily make again Sunday against the struggling Patriots defense.

New England also ranks No. 2 with 33 points scored per contest. This is, by far, the most favorable match up for the Panthers. The Panthers were already without starting cornerback Daryl Worley because of a pectoral muscle injury.

This is a vulnerable Patriots defense. He did it just last week.

Jourdan: If the defense can get penetration up front and hassle Tom Brady, if they can stop the run and if these corners play a little bit better than they did last week, if these linebackers stick with their gaps and try not to do a little too much, I think this defense puts this offense in a good position to be successful.
