Even his WWE title run was brief and relatively uneventful before he dropped the title to Randy Orton.
Two main events including Roman Reigns taking on John Cena and Brock Lesnar defending his title against Braun Strowman took place Sunday during WWE's Raw-exclusive pay-per-view event, No Mercy. To cement Reigns becoming "the man", Cena raised his hand after the match, and the two exchanged nods. While being interviewed by The Miz, Reigns called him an idiot which The Awesome One countered by reminding that he was the one who now held a title. Additionally, Roman Reigns will get an Intercontinental Championship match after he defeated The Miz in non-title action tonight. Wyatt ends up losing the final match, but goes back to doing the exact same process within a week to a different wrestler and WWE acts like nothing happened and he's still supposed to be a credible threat. Cena's 15-year career has seen its share of ups and downs; times when he was incredibly popular, and times when he was the most hated man in the company.
It also sets up the possibility of a Shield reunion with Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins at Survivor Series if they wanted a 3x3 tag match with the Miz and his Miztourage of Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas. Reigns wants to fight and when Miz starts walking away, Kurt Angle makes the match official for later tonight but right now, The Miztourage face Matt Hardy and Jason Jordan.
It is a good story.
That said, when the prospect of the Shield reuniting to face the Miztourage was brought up, the crowd exploded, with Reigns remarking that the potential match would be a easy victory for his team. It just needs to be booked correctly. You might not agree with all the decisions made, but give WWE credit for making it a noteworthy episode.
The WWE had a chance to do something new and give Braun Strowman his first world title reign. There's a whole lot of emotions going through me. Strowman dominated early on, but Lesnar got some good attacks of his own in there.
The manner of the loss was particularly concerning. In the end, the Beast turned out to be the victor even after Strowman brutally beat him up. Lesnar managed to put the massive Strowman into several suplexes. That era for all intents and purposes has already begun, with Reigns headlining the last three WrestleManias and arguably being the most consistently featured character on WWE TV since 2015. While Bray Wyatt's defeat may have been dedicated to the disrespect shown to superstars such as Goldust, the freakish one wanted to prove himself to Balor and the rest of the audience, in the ring.
No Mercy's main event between Braun Strowman and Brock Lesnar nearly saw a new champ crowned.
Expect a strong performance at Survivor Series in November from the Demon to keep his momentum up. Ambrose came to the ring to answer Strowman's challenge, but had a bandaged shoulder after last night's tag team match at "No Mercy".
Banks is a four-time Raw women's champion, but her reigns have combined for just 82 days - and zero retentions at PPVs. Mickie James and Alexa Bliss' segment works because it just feels so natural, with Bliss going after Mickie's age while she responds with a list of her credentials. Alexa comes out and says that no one was properly celebrating her win, and she was very disappointed. Reigns were the A-Listers guess and as predicted, the show went sour.
