If we assume that most Jets fans are onboard with this full-speed-ahead kamikaze flight path through the season, how are they supposed to respond to poor coaching?
It seems like the first of many to come as the New York Jets lost their season opener on Sunday afternoon 21-12 to the Buffalo Bills. It moves Buffalo to first in the AFC East for the time being after the New England Patriots fell on Thursday night and the Miami Dolphins game with the Tampa Bay Bucs postponed due to Hurricane Irma.
So when Bowles made an inexplicable coaching decision with four minutes remaining against the Bills on Sunday, he opened himself up to sardonic accusations from fans that he might actually be on their side in throwing the season. The Jets rushed for just 38 yards. They could get not get any push when running the ball and did a poor job of protecting quarterback Josh McCown.
"Had we went for it on fourth and not gotten it, then they got the ball back, by the time they punted with the three time outs we would have been backed up", Bowles said.
"Everybody's entitled to their own opinion", McCoy said.
Gang Green's lid-lifting 21-12 loss to the slightly less-anemic Bills was as ugly and painful as we imagined it might be many months ago when the roster deconstruction began in earnest, but one troubling sign emerged from this embarrassment: Todd Bowles is repeating mistakes.
Questions about quarterback Tyrod Taylor's availability were answered this week when he was cleared to play after suffering a concussion in the preseason.
The stripped-down Jets struggled to sustain drives until late in the third quarter when McCown led an 11-play, 75-yard march that culminated with his 1-yard touchdown run on fourth down. The Jets' wide receiver group might be the least proven in the league and, truthfully, it's still unknown how many snaps each pass catcher will play. New Bills kicker Steven Hauschka kicks four field goals and the defense scores a touchdown. The Hauschka kick was no good for his first attempt and miss of the season. Less than two minutes into the first quarter, this happened.
Brick wall against the run: After the first three preseason games where the starters actually play, the Bills defense held opponents to under three yards-per-carry. Connecting on his second one-yard passing touchdown of the day, this time to Andre Holmes. A 22-yard reception by Nick O'Leary put the Bills in scoring range. Bills lead series, 59-53. Conventional wisdom says you wait to break the two-point card out of your wallet until the fourth quarter, but in the Land of Horrible Football Teams, it's often best to push the envelope whenever possible.
Neither Matt Forte nor Bilal Powell showed any effectiveness at running the ball on Sunday. This was Taylor's 30th game with the Bills. The Jets beat the Bills twice last season.
McCoy, who reportedly had $2.5 million in performance incentives added to his $6 million base salary this week, also gained 49 yards on five receptions and became the sixth active player to surpass 12,000 career yards from scrimmage.
