Two teams connected to Super Bowl failure collide in a late game Sunday as Super Bowl losing Kyle Shanahan and his new team, the San Francisco 49ers, host Super Bowl losing quarterback Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers.

Here are some of the notable postgame quotes from the 49ers locker room.

The 49ers initially feared he broke his right tibia, but the X-ray was negative.

Coming off a disappointing 6-10 season, Carolina's defense clamped down on the 49ers early and didn't let up.

Shanahan said that the 49ers plan to have more tests run on Foster but that the rookie linebacker could have returned to the game. With the addition of 8th overall pick Christian McCaffrey and looking to protect Newton, the Panthers are continuing to adjust to their new offense.

Panthers running back Cameron Artis-Payne, Bengals tight end C.J. Uzomah, Packers defensive tackle Montravius Adams and Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Holsey were designated as inactive on Sunday. Heralded rookies Reuben Foster and Solomon Thomas combined for five tackles in their National Football League debuts, while linebacker NaVorro Bowman made five tackles in his return from a serious injury suffered in 2016. "Still got to do more tests and stuff".

Shanahan said he would take some time to go back and look at those situations to decide if he needs to alter his thinking.

Foster had three tackles, including one for a loss, and broke up a pass in his limited action.

"I definitely expect us to be farther along", Shanahan said. "It's sad that I had a nick in the ankle". He only threw 2 passes in the preseason so it's going to take some game reps in actual games before he really gets comfortable with that shoulder and get his timing with his receivers. McCaffrey carried 13 times for 47 yards, with a long run of 11 yards, and lost one fumble. Tartt made a one-hand leaping catch to intercept the ball and rushed for 38 yards.

Including McCaffrey's three punt returns, the rookie led the Panthers with 92 all-purpose yards on 21 touches.

Head Coach Kyle Shanahan didn't do a very good job with the offensive play calling in this game.

"Was solid with the exception of the fumble", Rivera said of McCaffrey's effort. "It happens, but it can't happen".

"I thought our guys responded, though".

"But you've also got to be wise and smart about when you play with it and when you don't because you don't want to wear the batteries out". DeForest Buckner had a hit on Newton and four pressures, but Solomon Thomas and no pressures in 19 pass rushes, per Pro Football Focus. We had that deep ball that we just missed on third down. With a final score of 23-3, the Panthers displayed how well they can play when healthy, putting together steady offensive drives and dominating on defense. "I'm pretty confident in his abilities and hopefully things will fall into place nicely for us on Sunday".
