That hardly mattered to Jordan and his teammates, though, who rebounded from a disappointing 1-1 tie against Panama in their tournament opener last weekend.
Starting with a Gold Cup victory in penalties against Panama in 2005, the Americans had at least made it to the finals for five straight tournaments prior to the 2015 event, when they faltered. "It was a battle all night".
And while the United States defense struggled at times in the second half, allowing Kevin Parsemain's brace and Martinique's two-goal fightback, Arena pointed out these matches continue to be as much about evaluating individual talent as team results. Anything is possible. He could roll out the same unit that struggled to control the midfield against Panama, knowing that Dax McCarty and Kellyn Acosta both had off games.
Bedoya made a nice play two minutes after coming into the game when he was part of the build-up to the second goal.
"With this group, the majority is very young players consolidating with each other at a senior level", said Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio. "We're guilty of making the game more hard than it needed to be, but give Martinique credit".
Lineup tweaks: Midfielder Cristian Roldan made his USA debut against Martinique and Morrow his first global appearance in 41/2 years as coach Bruce Arena made eight changes from the lineup that opened with a disappointing 1-1 tie against Panama last weekend. As a result the USA got their win, and because of Panama's 2-1 win, are on top of Group B thanks to the goals scored tiebreaker. Both teams are trailing behind Martinique in Group B and will be looking for the three points from the encounter. The top two teams in each of the three groups advance to the quarterfinals along with the two best third-place teams.
He added: "We have 23 players and we have to approach each game differently". Arena took a chance, though, believing they could provide the qualities that helped earn them regular roles under Jurgen Klinsmann before injury sidelined Zardes and a sophomore slump slowed down Morris. So despite the fact this wasn't our A-team taking on Panama, I should have been excited considering it's not every week that I see the now-Bruce Arena led squad play.
Martinique were unlucky to not go into their dressing room with a one goal lead at the break.
When Morris got another chance, he nailed it, darting in front of Olimpa, who had his hands out ready scoop up Eric Lichaj's low cross, Morris nicked it into the goal.
But the intention will have to be to claim a convincing win, as the USA have yet to put in a decent performance in the tournament so far.
"It's a great way to support the Men's National Team and, of course support, America", said Lila Asani of Portland, Oregon.
One wrinkle that could provide this David with a little extra help against Goliath: The squad's current general manager is David Regis, the former U.S. global who was born on Martinique and is helping his native land prepare for this meeting. Because the tiny island is still owned by France, Martinique cannot qualify for the World Cup but can still make some noise in CONCACAF.
