Why 'Homecoming' Is The Perfect High School-Themed Spider-Man Flick

Still considered by most fans to be Spidey's best big-screen outing until Tom Holland stole the show in Captain America: Civil War, the second installment in director Sam Raimi's trilogy had Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) suiting up to take on Dr. Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina) and his newly acquired set of sentient metal arms.

"I do think Iron Man, like Spider-Man, like Batman, like Superman, like James Bond has existed long before most of us were around and will exist long after most of us are gone", Feige said. Seventeen years ago, Starr was playing a clean-cut student on "Freaks"; in "Homecoming", he plays a bearded high-school teacher who leads a student trip to Washington.

That may be, but for now we'd love to be a fly on the wall for what comes immediately next in that scene of a spider caught in his own web.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is expected to earn around $100 million in revenue within the first week of its premiere. Perhaps never before has there been a year like this one, when all the leading superhero movies - "Wonder Woman", "Logan", "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and this weekend's "Spider-Man: Homecoming" - have been critical favorites. Every night he takes off under the guise of a Tony Stark internship to lurk around the neighborhood in his brand new high-tech Spider suit, but nothing much happens until a confrontation at a local bank reveals a black market for alien-powered weapons. The way the bigger world was localized down to a still up and coming Spider-Man's beat brought out the best of Spidey and the best of the MCU.

One of the brilliant things about "Spider-Man: Homecoming" (and there are several) is that it doesn't even try to be an origin story, as both 2002's "Spider-Man" and 2012's "The Amazing Spider-Man" did. Spider-Man: Homecoming is a decent film and movie-goers will feel obligated to see it because of the tie-in with The Avengers, but I sure hope Sony turns this thing around and gives us a great movie next time out.

Watts says that Keaton, who doesn't even like to refer to Toomes as a villain, had a good time trying to make the character more complex. Skip to the 58-minute mark of the first movie to get an idea of what passes for an action-packed fight scene in these laugh-out-loud howlers. "Next time, though, could our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man be a little less neighbourly and a little more snarky?" That's why I love movies. "For all his super-gifts and despite the weird and risky company he keeps, he is also a teenage boy - that's his Kryptonite, what cuts him down to recognizable human size". Now in the villain role, Keaton turns in a very good performance that has a threatening presence in his confrontations with Peter, but also comes across as nearly a sympathetic villain with some solid motivation. "She's got a feminist and humanist edge - at least in my head".

Summary: SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is a superhero fantasy action adventure in which a high-schooler with super powers attempts to prove himself worthy of a position on the "Avengers" team by foiling an arms dealer. If you weren't excited about this release before, you should be.

PS - The debut of Spider-Man is bittersweet with word of the passing of Joan Lee.
