Senators threatened to cut funding without a strategy.

U.S. Defense Secretary Gen. James Mattis wrote yesterday in a statement to the House Armed Services Committee, "The most urgent and risky threat to peace and security is North Korea".

He said that is the floor to preserve the competitive advantage the military enjoys today. Since 9/11, war has accelerated wear and tear on equipment and troops, Dunford explained.

Dunford said Beijing and Moscow were specifically investing in anti-ship cruise missiles, anti-ship ballistic missiles and electronic warfare capabilities, assets he said are created to prevent USA military forces from projecting power around the globe.

American military officials acknowledge the situation in Afghanistan is at stalemate nearly 16 years after the war started, and it has deteriorated in recent months. "But we recognize the need for urgency and your criticism is fair, sir".

The defense secretary also was asked what winning looked like in Afghanistan.

Mattis says, "Mr. Putin has chosen to be a strategic competitor". "It's hard when we have no strategy to pursue". So all I can tell you is, that unless we get a strategy from, you're going to a get strategy from us.

Mattis, speaking before the panel, warned of the potential losses in the case of conflict with North Korea.

"We have spent six years just getting by, asking more and more of those who serve, and putting off the choices that have to be made".

Qatar is a "very complex situation", Mattis said, as he stressed the need to find "common ground".

Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis said Tuesday that the White House would deliver its revised strategy for Afghanistan by mid-July, amid growing frustrations on Capitol Hill that the country's security is worsening with no plan of action in sight. "Both countries are making their objections known by challenging established global norms, such as freedom of the seas and the sovereignty of nations on their periphery", he said. "We've got to confront them there".

Officials have said the strategy in Afghanistan needs to be flexible enough to provide the tools needed for Afghan forces to put more pressure on the Taliban.

U.S. military commanders, who saw fragile security gains eroded under Obama-era troop drawdowns, have been pushing for a new strategy that could see thousands of additional soldiers deploy to Afghanistan to help train and advise beleaguered Afghan partners. To date, more than 2,300 Americans have been killed and more than 17,000 wounded since the war began in 2001. We still haven't got a strategy for Afghanistan.

Mr Mattis was addressing lawmakers seeking additional information about President Donald Trump's proposed 2018 budget.

Since then, the coalition has taken down Manbij and targeted Raqqa, the de facto IS capital.

The C4ADS report said a small number of interconnected Chinese firms accounted for the vast proportion of trade with North Korea, leaving the impoverished country's procurement network vulnerable to targeted, enforced sanctions.

McCain mentioned the "three fearless Americans" who were killed in Afghanistan on Saturday, when an Afghan soldier gunned them down. Syrian President Bashar Assad is "flexing his muscle" and moving to break through to the surrounded government garrison in Deir-ez-Zor.
