Draft Is Next Up During NBA's Dizzying Days of Deals

Noel is gone, traded at the deadline, and Simmons should be more of a factor on the perimeter, but the team still desperately needed to fill out the backcourt.

The Philadelphia 76ers have selected Washington Huskies point guard Markelle Fultz with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.

More than two dozen picks into Thursday night's National Basketball Association draft and not one senior has been selected.

It was a surprise in the first place that Fultz, a lead guard who can score at all three levels of the defense, was available to the Sixers in the first place.

Fultz, wearing orange sneakers made of basketballs at the Barclays Center, is a natural talent on the court that moves with fluidity and ease, and his abilities and tendencies have been dissected heavily heading into Thursday's draft.

"It's been a little insane the last couple days", Duke forward Jayson Tatum said Wednesday. So it would seem that Fultz's team could have probably filled in the necessary (city) and (team name) before the usual draft-night craziness. Former and future No. 1 picks already have been dealt this week. You may sell a pick because it's a valuable asset and it may just not be right in terms of fit for your roster at that particular moment.

"This is something I've been dreaming about since I was a kid", Fultz said during a news conference at the draft in Brooklyn. But having lived in both, I can say they share some very important similarities. I sensed it, I felt it, and we get that feedback from players, agents, conversations with your colleagues in the marketplace, the 29 other teams.

Although Fultz heads what's widely regarded as a strong draft class, the prospects have had to share the spotlight this week with veterans who are - or could be - on the move.

THEIR TIME TO SHINE: With so much trade speculation about All-Stars such as Paul George and Jimmy Butler, there hasn't been as much focus as usual leading into Thursday on the players who are in the draft.

INTERNATIONAL INTRIGUE: A year after almost half the draft - a record 27 of the 60 picks - were international players, French guard Frank Ntilikina and Finnish forward Lauri Markkanen, who played a year at Arizona, are two of the top international players. "The way they put in the time with their players to develop them, I don't think it's matched". "And I'm just looking forward to going in there and giving it my all and hopefully changing the program around". "I just realized that I was doing stuff that other kids weren't doing and it just started to work out for me". He was also the MVP of last year's ACC Tournament and the only unanimous first-team all-ACC selection. It takes time for young players, even the best ones, to develop and learn how to win at an elite level in the National Basketball Association.

With so many talented players, covering the gamut of skills and sizes, expected to be picked in the lottery, it was inevitable that one player would surprisingly slip into the 11th pick.

In his lone season at Kansas, Jackson became one of the most decorated freshman school history.

Kelsey Plum, an NCAA record setter, was selected first overall in the 2017 WNBA Draft. As a result, he and Fultz will be the first teammates to be No. 1 overall picks and rookies at the same time.

Making matters more perilous, every team is poised to make trades or position themselves for free agency. Irving and James are the only players in that span to do it with the team that drafted them.
